KRU (Kiteboarding Riders United) is the union behind the WKL. KRU is the Union for professional kiteboard riders. The union was founded in 2016 by riders for the riders. The board members are Youri Zoon, Alex Pastor, Annelous Lammerts and Liam Whaley.
After the 2015 season there were a lot of promises but also a lot of uncertainties about the future of professional kiteboarding; and sadly the riders were never able to be part of the discussions that would determine their futures. To be able to have more control over the direction professional kiteboarding would take, we decided to take responsibilities into our own hands. This lead to the founding of the World Kiteboarding League. Our aim is to bring the sport to the next level, to reach a larger audience, and to be more responsible!
To be able to do this we needed a strong management team, so we motivated a couple of people with the right motivation to support us. Danny Galiart is our interim CEO, Mr Lammerts handles our finances, and Austin Stewart is our legal advisor.
We started this movement with this motto in mind: “Let’s have a tour with only winners!” This includes all riders but also all our fans. So let’s do this together!
WKL Board members and Management
First of all I’m a passionate kiteboarder myself, my connection to the professional league is my daughter Isabeau. I know what it takes to be a professional kiteboarder. That is why I have so much respect for the riders! I was following the competitions from the side-line, and felt bad for the riders that the fastest growing water and extreme sport on the highest level was not moving! So I offered them my support, and we started the WKL. It’s nice to be able to do something for the athletes with the knowledge that I have built over the years. The combination of being a former pro athlete and an entrepreneur really helped in this whole process!
My personal aim is to create a tour with only winners!
I’m the youngest on the board but no less motivated! I’m still in the beginning of my sport career. I represent the new generation of riders. The sport has so much potential, and I did not see things progressing as they could. Therefore I stepped-up and took my responsibility!
I’m not only a pro kiteboarder but an entrepreneur as well. From being a entrepreneur, I see a lot of possible chances and opportunities for the sport. I want the fans to be more connected with the competitions, and I have a lot of ideas to make this happen. That is why I joined the board of the WKL! I am looking forward to all the new challenges and opportunities.
After spending about 12 years on tour and dedicating my life to it, I saw the tour drastically changing in a way that I did not like at all.
I decided to stop working with people, companies, associations or any other person or institution that does not protect the future and the interests of Freestyle kite sports.
We started the KRU, where the riders point out the direction they want to go, creating a platform that is sustainable for the future, and providing young talent the opportunity to ride back in a tour that is helping them forward.
